Local residents are invited to an Issues
Forum featuring ballot measures 49 and 50 at 7 p.m. Oct. 17 in the Kern Room
of the Columbia River Maritime Museum, 1792 Marine Drive. This forum is
sponsored by the Astoria branch of the American Association of University
Women.
Measure 49 modifies Measure 37 and clarifies right to build homes, limits
large developments, and protects farmlands, forest lands, groundwater.
Measure 50 amends the constitution and dedicates funds to provide health
care for children, and fund tobacco prevention, through an increased tobacco
tax.
Speaking for Measure 49 will be Bob Stacey, the executive director of 1000
Friends of Oregon. Speaking in opposition will be Ross Day, director of
legal affairs of Oregonians in Action. State Sen. Ben Westlund will speak
for Measure 50. Speaking against it will be J.L. Wilson, spokesman for
Oregonians Against the Blank Check Committee.
Written questions for the candidates will be accepted both at the door and
during the forum. The questions will be collected and read by a
representative of AAUW.
